Settelex

An antacid for horses and ponies
Settelex

Product Description

Settelex is a scientifically designed and tested supplement that reduces the horse's motivation to crib or windsuck by having a soothing effect on the digestive system. Cribbing involves the horse grasping at a fixed object with its front incisor teeth, then pulling back and sucking air into its upper throat while making a characteristic grunting sound. Windsucking is the same action but the horse does not use an object to grasp.

Product Benefits

Settelex contains ingredients that reduce the horse's motivation to crib or wind-suck by having a soothing effect on the digestive system, making for a happier horse and a more relaxed owner. It can also act to offset some of the pre-conditions for the development of gastric ulcers by neutralising potentially harmful stomach acids.

Feed to
Any horse or pony that cribs or windsucks, or for horses with a genetic predisposition to gastric ulcers.

Feeding Guide
Weight of Horse/PonyApproximate heightAmount per feed
Up to 400kg/880lbUp to 14hh1/2 scoop
400kg/880lb and over14hh and over1 scoop
For best results, initially feed twice per day and up to a maximum of three times daily
1 level scoop of Settelex weighs approximately 30g/1oz. Settelex should be fed according to bodyweight - height has been given only as a guide. Introduce gradually and feed a maximum of 3 times per day. Settelex should be added immediately prior to feeding - if not, effectiveness may be lost.

Advice

Avoid feeding large concentrate meals and always feed at least 1% plus of your horse's bodyweight per day in fibrous forage. Horses with signs of excess stomach acid should ideally have continual access to forage. Settelex is not a treatment for gastric ulcers - please contact your vet if you are concerned. Settelex is a supplementary feed for equine animals. It is not a licensed medicine. IF YOU ARE IN ANY DOUBT ABOUT YOUR HORSE OR PONY'S HEALTH OR CONDITION, CONTACT YOUR VETERINARIAN.

Further Information
The Horse and Sterotypical (Obsessive-Compulsive) Behaviour

Windsucking and cribbing used to be called vices, indicating a bad quality in the horse. However, research has shown that these so-called vices are actually abnormal behaviours that develop due to exposure to an unsuitable, barren environment and/or unnatural and unsuitable feeding practices. Such abnormal obsessive-compulsive behaviours are more correctly described as oral sterotypes.
In most cases the air sucked in is not actually swallowed. These stereotypes can be associated with a higher risk of digestive disturbances and general poor condition. This may be due to a combination of the horse spending less time eating forage, therefore having inadequate fibre and calorie intake and management practices that induce the behaviours such as high concentrate feeds, low forage intakes and full time stabling.
